Bali Island, often dubbed as the “Island of God” and its neighboring island, Lombok, have numerous stunning waterfalls. Though less popular compared to other tourist destinations, the waterfalls are undoubtedly very beautiful and surely worth a visit. Here are some of the most famous waterfalls on the islands of Bali and Lombok.

Tegenungan Waterfall, Bali
Also known as Kemenuh Waterfall, Tegenungan Waterfall is located at Kemenuh Village, Gianyar District, only 16 kilometers from Denpasar, the capital of Bali Province. The height of the waterfall is around 50 meters. The crystal clear water is surrounded by high trees. Local people use the water for drinking and other domestic purposes. To reach the waterfall, visitors must walk up and down hundreds of rock steps along the edge of Tukad Petanu River. A small path allows visitors to climb to the top of nearby valley to get an overall view of the waterfall. The pond around the waterfall is considered dangerous for swimming.

Sekumpul Waterfalls, Bali
Sekumpul in local language means “a collection” or “a group of”. The name “Sekumpul” was given to a group of waterfalls located in Buleleng, a district stretching along the northern coast of Bali Island. The waterfalls are situated between the villages of Sawan and Bebetin. They lay hidden in the middle of unspoiled forest. To reach these waterfalls visitors need to walk over steeply and sometimes slippery slopes for more than an hour before crossing a brown-colored river. It is a tough journey, but luckily the path is shaded by high trees, thus trekkers are protected from hot sun. Along the path visitors could also see several small villages while enjoying the beautiful scenery. There are at least six waterfalls on the site, each with different sources of water. The highest waterfall soars around 150 meters above the ground. Near the waterfalls stands Pura Dalem Jagaraga Temple, a beautiful worshipping place full of beautiful carved stones and decorative ornaments. The waterfalls are surrounded by tall hardwoods, clove, coffee and vanilla trees. Birdsongs are heard everywhere, building up a more peaceful atmosphere. Sekumpul Waterfalls are considered as the most beautiful on the island.
Git Git Waterfall
Gitgit Waterfall is probably the most famous waterfall on Bali Island. The height of the waterfall reaches 35 meters. It is surrounded by dense rainforest vegetations. Situated 300 meters above sea level, Gitgit Waterfall is located in GigGit Village, around 70 kilometers to the north of Denpasar, Bali’s capital city. A national monument, Bhuwana Pangkung Bangka stands nearby. To get to the waterfall, visitors must walk up a steeply winding road. Clove and coffee trees grow along the road. The location of the waterfall is also a perfect spot to enjoy the view of terraced paddy field and Buleleng Beach. Wild monkeys are often seen near the waterfall. The waterfall was opened as public recreation centre and promoted as international tourist destination in 1975
Gangga Waterfalls, Lombok
Gangga Waterfalls are situated in the northern part of Lombok Island, about 50 kilometers to the north of Mataram, the capital city of the island. The waterfalls are nestled in the middle of a small forest stretching between the Gangga and Kerta Raharja Villages, around 15 kilometers off the main coastal road. The road leading to the waterfalls is rather sloppy and bumpy. Along the road visitors are greeted by vast green paddy field. There are three waterfalls in the location. .Mount Rinjani stands majestically at the background. Beautiful view of sunrise and sunset can also be enjoyed from the waterfalls.
Sendang Gila and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls, Lombok
Sendang Gila and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls are located inside Mount Rinjani National Park, a park well-recognized for its high biodiversity. The waterfalls sit 600 meters above sea level; about two hours drive from Mataram City. They are relatively easy to access. By following irrigation canal, visitors can reach Sendang Gila Waterfall in twenty minutes. “Gila” is the local word for “crazy”. Legend has it that this waterfall was discovered when local villagers shooed a raging (or crazy) lion out of their village. The height of Sendang Gila Waterfall is more than 30 meters.

Tiu Kelep can be reached by walking upriver from Sendang Gila for an hour. However, the path is in poor condition. Local people believe that the water from the waterfalls have healing power. They believe that swimming in the water can make a person one year younger. While visiting these waterfalls visitors also had a chance to stop at Lendang Bajur, a local market, to buy supplies and souvenirs. The nearby forest is the home of wild monkeys and the surrounding hills provide several great spots for photography.
